Bethesda Game Studios director and executive producer Todd Howard declares that Fallout 76 will not ‚mark the future‘ of games from the publisher and developer.
Without a doubt, many gamers were excited to learn that Fallout 76 will be offering the first instance of an online multiplayer experience for the long-running franchise, but some were disappointed by the announcement. While the forthcoming game won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, Bethesda Game Studios director and executive producer Todd Howard wants to assuage those discouraged by the direction that the next entry in the post-apocalyptic series is taking that it will not “mark the future” of other games from the publisher and developer.
This much was declared by Howard in a recent interview at Gamelab Barcelona with GamesIndustry.biz, with the Bethesda Game Studios head stating that Fallout 76 isn’t representative of the company’s plans for future single-player experiences in other games. As Howard explains, “It doesn’t mark the future. Corporately we’ve done a mix; people forget sometimes. Elder Scrolls Online is one of the biggest online games in the world, we have Fallout Shelter which we keep updating, and Elder Scrolls: Legends.”
Howard then went on to state that Fallout 76 is emblematic of Bethesda’s willingness to explore and produce all types of game types possible, and even criticizes the perpetual argument regarding single-player campaigns not being viable anymore. As stated by Howard, “Anyone who has ever said ‘this is the future and this part of gaming is dead’ has been proven wrong every single time. We like to try it all. For a long time we wanted to try a multiplayer game and we had this idea. We shouldn’t be afraid. We should try it.”
Taking all of this into account, it sounds as if Fallout 76 ought to scratch the multiplayer itch that many fans of the franchise have wanted for so long, but it’s also good to hear that Bethesda won’t be modeling any of its future releases after the post-apocalyptic game. Howard has previously said that Fallout 5 will focus on single-player, but it will be interesting to see what kind of gameplay the mysterious sci-fi project Starfield will contain.
Fallout 76 is set to release on November 14,2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
