Atlanta pitcher Sean Newcomb was one out away from a no-hitter, after which he apologized for offensive tweets he sent as a teenager.
ATLANTA — Sean Newcomb came within one strike of pitching the first no-hitter by the Atlanta Braves since 1994, but offensive tweets he sent as a teenager were the story after Atlanta’s 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.
Newcomb said he had forgotten about racist, homophobic and sexist tweets he sent in 2011 and 2012, but was quickly reminded a few minutes after speaking with the media about the game.
After seeing that he had been called out, the 25-year-old Newcomb said it was his idea to bring reporters back to the clubhouse so he could address the issue before he went home.
“I just wanted to apologize for any insensitive material,” Newcomb said. “It was a long time ago, six or seven years ago, saying some stupid stuff with friends.”
Newcomb’s no-hit bid was denied when Chris Taylor sharply singled with two outs in the ninth inning. It came on a 2-2 count, on Newcomb’s 134th and final pitch.
Three days after being acquired from Toronto, Happ took a shutout into the fifth before Salvador Perez’s opposite-field home run into the Yankees bullpen in right-center. Happ (11-6) struck out two and walked one, and the first-time All-Star ended a four-start winless streak.
