We’ll have to wait for Christmas…
Ruth Bader Ginsberg is getting the Hollywood treatment in the new film “On the Basis of Sex,” which tells the story of the Supreme Court justice’s younger and more formative years. And though the film won’t enter theaters until Christmas, the trailer was just released.
“On the Basis of Sex” will feature top-notch talent, with Felicity Jones playing the role of Ginsberg. In the trailer, we’re given a sneak peek of the main conflict of the film: a court case that Ginsberg and her husband, Marty, brought before the U. S Court of Appeals.
The young Ginsberg is portrayed as a hungry, eager lawyer working toward gender equality.
In the trailer, Jones spits out iconic lines like, “Protests are important, but changing the culture means nothing if the law doesn’t change” and, “I worked hard, I did everything I was supposed to, and I excelled.”
The clip ends with Ginsberg appearing before a bench of judges, with one of the men quipping, “The word ‚woman‘ does not appear even once in the U. S. Constitution.” The young attorney then responds, “Nor does the word ‚freedom,‘ your honor.”
The Supreme Court justice has a long history of breaking gender norms, as the new film seeks to tell. She is only the second woman confirmed to the Supreme Court — the first was Sandra Day O’Connor, who was appointed by former President Ronald Reagan. Ginsberg graduated at the top of her class from Columbia Law School and was a top lawyer with the ACLU.
In 1993, former President Bill Clinton appointed Ginsberg to the Supreme Court, and the rest is history. She and Justice Sonia Sotomayor are widely seen as the most liberal voices on the bench.
Ginsberg has become a cultural icon. Earlier this year, a documentary titled “RBG” was released that told the story of how she became a cultural icon.
Unfortunately, we only have the brief two-minute-long clip of the film, but if it’s any indication of the full-length movie we’ll get this Christmas, it looks like it’s going to be a great feature.
