Aretha Franklin, the ‚Queen of Soul,‘ has passed away at the age of 76.
According to a statement issued by the late-singer’s family, Franklin died at her home in Detroit the morning of August 16 after fighting an ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer.
„Franklin’s official cause of death was due to advance pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin’s oncologist, Dr. Philip Phillips of Karamonos Cancer Institute,“ the family said in the statement.
While Franklin’s sudden passing shook musicians and fans alike, many took to social media to celebrate the singer’s life and impressive career.

Over the course of her nearly 60-year career, Franklin achieved some of the most prestigious accolades. Out the 44 Grammy nominations she received, Franklin took 18 wins home — including the Grammy Legend Award in 1991 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994. In 1987, Franklin also became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Additionally, in 2005, Franklin was one of the select few civilians to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civil award.
To date, her net worth sits at $80 million.
The pianist, writer and vocalist fought for years to earn her respect in the music industry — but through her hard work and dedication, she undoubtedly cemented her place as one of the greatest artists of all time.
„From that day in January 1967, when producer Jerry Wexler took Aretha to Muscle Shoals, Alabama and she sat down at the piano to record her first Atlantic record, “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You),” music was never the same,“ Craig Kallman and Julie Greenwald, co-chairmen at Atlantic Records said in a joint statement.
