Police thus far have refrained from revealing the suspect’s identity
Dutch police opened fire on an individual Friday accused of stabbing two people in the nation’s capitol.
The incident, which took place at the Amsterdam Central railway station, resulted in three people, including the suspect, being taken to a nearby hospital.
Amsterdam’s police department confirmed the shooting in a tweet sent out early this morning.
An eye witness speaking with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf described seeing more than a dozen law enforcement vehicles on scene.
“There was a big chaos in the station… it was teeming with police,” the witness said. “I saw something like fifteen [police] cars and lots of agents. There was also a police helicopter circling above.”
Although the station wasn’t evacuated, police closed down two train platforms in response.
“Central Station is a busy entry and exit point for visitors to the Dutch capital, with regular trains linking it to the city’s Schiphol Airport,” VOA notes. “Friday is one of the busiest days of the week, with many tourists arriving for the weekend.”
Police thus far have refrained from providing details surrounding the stabbing. The identity of the suspect has also yet to be released.
It still remains unknown as to whether the attack was related to terrorism as well.
