With any new device release, the inevitable follow up that builds part of the review for that device is a benchmark to test the specifications and a battery test to see how it compares against the competition.
One of the standout features of the Galaxy Note 9 was the increased 4000mAh battery that would see added life to the device. While an increased battery is certainly a benefit, without any context or comparison the capacity of a battery is relative. Youtuber Mrwhosetheboss conducted a battery drain test where he pitted the Galaxy Note 9 up against the iPhone X, Huawei P20 Pro, Galaxy S9+, and OnePlus 6 to see how it compares.

He placed all the phones side by side to start at a full 100% charge and started to conduct various tasks such as gaming, watching videos, and benchmarking to try and drain the battery. The Galaxy Note 9 beat all the other devices by quite a significant margin. The device managed to last 5 hours and 21 minutes while the Huawei P20 Pro drained itself almost 30 minutes later. The OnePlus 6 was 3rd while the Galaxy S9 and the iPhone X had just 3 minutes between them before they eventually ran out. The video made sure to note that the phones used in the test were all below 50 battery cycles and therefore relatively new, which is important since battery performance can deteriorate above a certain number of cycles.
While battery test is subjective, much like benchmarks, and force the battery to perform under conditions that are not similar to real-world use, it does provide that context as to how long the battery is likely to last. Given most people will be able to relate to how long one of the devices the Note 9 was compared against will last, seeing the Note 9 last longer than that device enables a real-world comparison before even getting the device.
The Note 9, in some people’s opinion, was an iterative update with many of the features simply being transferred from the Galaxy S9+ to the Note 9. The biggest improvement in the Note 9 is arguably the battery and at least now the battery test can provide consumers that comparison.
