Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team wants to question President Trump about obstruction of justice — a development that sparked his vituperative morning tweetstorm, ABC News reported Wednesday.
Trump learned within the past day that the special counsel would limit the scope of questioning and would like to ask questions both verbally and in writing for the president to respond to, the network reported, citing sources close to the White House.
The request prompted Trump’s tweetstorm Wednesday morning, when he fired off seven tweets attacking Mueller’s team and other perceived enemies, including ex-FBI director James Comey and Hillary Clinton.
“This is a terrible situation and Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now, before it continues to stain our country any further. Bob Mueller is totally conflicted, and his 17 Angry Democrats that are doing his dirty work are a disgrace to USA!” Trump wrote in one typically fiery tweet.
His lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said later that the commander-in-chief was merely expressing his opinion — not actually calling for the probe to end.
“Russian Collusion with the Trump Campaign, one of the most successful in history, is a TOTAL HOAX. The Democrats paid for the phony and discredited Dossier which was, along with Comey, McCabe, Strzok and his lover, the lovely Lisa Page, used to begin the Witch Hunt. Disgraceful!” the president raged in another tweet.
Negotiations over a potential presidential interview have gone on for months.
Giuliani told ABC News a week ago that his team had submitted a response to Mueller asking him to limit the scope of any interview with Trump especially as it related to obstruction of justice.
Speaking after an appearance in New Hampshire Wednesday, Giuliani said he had gotten a response from the special counsel’s office without getting into details.
“They took about 10 days and yesterday we got a letter back for them. Now we’re in the process of responding to their proposal,” Giuliani said.
The president’s legal team declined to comment when reached by ABC News about details on Mueller’s responses.
It was reported last week that Mueller was eyeballing Trump’s tweets attacking Attorney General Jeff Sessions and others as part of his probe into obstruction.
