On October 1 of last year, the 64-year-old Paddock opened fire on a crowd of concertgoers from his perch at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas. He killed 58 people and injured some 800 more after firing off close to 1,000 rounds. With no criminal history and no case of mental illness, exactly why Paddock carried out his plan has remained a mystery since day one. His established wealth as a retiree further adds confusion.
“By all accounts Stephen Paddock was an unremarkable man,” Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said in a press conference Friday.
Lombardo noted that Paddock had a „troubled mind“ prior to the killing. Since Paddock killed himself before police could apprehend him and no manifesto was left, his reasons died with him on that horrible October night. Lombardo admits that police can only take their best „educated guests.“ More from The Huffington Post:
One particular theory floated was Paddock’s recent gambling losses, but those fail to hold sway in light of the fact Paddock had no debts and was independently wealthy. The guns and ammunition used in the attack were purchased himself over several years.
The case remains a mystery for now. Within a year, however, the FBI’s behavioral analysis unit will release a full report on Paddock’s pathology, which may provide answers.
