Samsung has just announced the Portable SSD X5, the company’s first NVMe-based portable SSD. The device brings exceptional performance and reliability for an external storage devices and uses Thunderbolt 3 in order to transfer the data from the computer. The X5 comes in three versions, a 500GB model, a 1TB model, and a 2TB model, retailing for $399.99, $699.99, and $1,399.99 respectively.
Dr Mike Mang, vice president of Brand Product Marketing, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics, commented on the device, saying:
Using Thunderbolt 3, the X5 delivers speeds four times faster than USB 3.1 devices. The device offers read speeds of up to 2,800 MB/s – that’s 5.2 times faster than SATA interface portable SSDs, and 25.5 times faster than external HDDs. It writes data at up to 2,300 MB/s. In the real world, these speeds mean you can transfer a 20GB 4K UHD video in just 12 seconds. Unfortunately, the device is restricted by its use of Thunderbolt 3 as not many PCs come with this port.
The X5 has a full-metal body, a glossy finish, and a non-slip bottom mat. The internal frame is shock resistant and the out casing is rugged, these two design decision allow it to survive drops of up to two metres. The X5 also comes with an internal mechanical solution called Dynamic Thermal Guard which keeps the device from overheating and allows of optimal performance at all times. Lastly, the X5 comes with Samsung Portable SSD Software which allows you to encrypt the device using AES 256-bit hardware data encryption.
