‚Our relationship with Mexico is getting closer by the hour,‘ he says
President Trump has signaled that an improved trade deal with Mexico is in the works, crediting “some good people” within the new Mexican government.
“Our relationship with Mexico is getting closer by the hour. Some really good people within both the new and old government, and all working closely together…. A big Trade Agreement with Mexico could be happening soon!” he tweeted Saturday.
The president has spoken of better relations with Mexico following the rise of Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has so far been respectful to Trump.
“I received a call from Donald Trump and we talked for half an hour. I proposed to explore a comprehensive agreement; of development projects that generate jobs in Mexico, and with that, reduce migration and improve security. There was respectful treatment and our representatives will talk,” Obrador tweeted last month.
Trump recognized his diplomatic tone and repaid in kind.
“Deal with Mexico is coming along nicely. Autoworkers and farmers must be taken care of or there will be no deal. New President of Mexico has been an absolute gentleman,” Trump tweeted earlier this month.
The president went on to say that Canada’s tariffs and trade barriers were so high that negotiations weren’t yet on the table.
“Canada must wait. Their Tariffs and Trade Barriers are far too high. Will tax cars if we can’t make a deal!”
