On Friday, President Trump jumped into the fray over New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statements earlier this week that “America was never great.” Cuomo is locked in a highly-watched race with former Sex in the City star Cynthia Nixon, who has stolen his luster and his spotlight. Cuomo backed down from his comments earlier this week, and Nixon ripped him for him.
Now Trump is jumping into the act:
Cuomo did say earlier this week that he doesn’t intend to run for president, although he called Trump’s actions “repugnant to our values.” Ironically, Trump donated $64,000 to Cuomo between 2001 and 2009; Cuomo never returned the money. Nixon bashed him on it, stating, “Andrew Cuomo will take donations from anyone. Everyone from the Koch Brothers to fossil fuel companies have contributed, so we weren’t surprised to find out that Donald Trump has donated $64,000 to Cuomo.”
It’s smart politics for Trump to force Democrats to defend Cuomo’s idiotic statements. Even Cuomo has already backed off of them. But if Trump believes that Nixon will present less of a political threat to him than Cuomo, he’s wrong – if Nixon were to actually win the New York governorship, she’d be far more of a political threat than Cuomo.
