According to a news report by IDC, Apple has shipped approximately 5 million watches in the three months of the second quarter of 2018 itself. Earlier to this, Counterpoint Research had reported that in Q2 of 2018, Apple’s Series 1 and Series 3 emerged as the best-selling brand of smartwatches globally.
With a shipment of a total of 4.7 million units of Apple smartwatches worldwide during the quarter ended June, the brand’s wearable market share rose to an impressive 17%. The percentage increase in the industry space led to the rise of Apple’s position as a Global leader in wearables. The sale of 4.7 million units is also indicative of the growth the company has achieved in terms of sales as compared to last year when it recorded 3.4 million units of sold wearables.
In comparison, Fitbit was the only wearable manufacturer who saw a decline of 0.7 million units of sale in Q2 of 2018 as compared to last year. Nevertheless, with a global shipment of 2.7 million units of its smartwatch, Fitbit stood 3rd in the overall percentage market share. The overall market performance remained positive with all manufacturers seeing an upswing in their number of units sold.
On the other hand, Xiaomi placed second with a global shipment of 4.2 million wearable units, while Huawei placed fourth with a noteworthy performance of a total shipment of 1.8 million units during the same quarter. Huawei shipped 1 million units more in this quarter than it did last year.
This increase charts the company’s growth rate at an astounding 118.1%. Placed on the last rung among the top five is Garmin whose shipment quantity rose slightly to touch the 1.5 million mark for the quarter ended June 2018.
With Apple Series 4 waiting in the wings, it will not be long before the company crosses the 5 million per quarter shipment mark. Huawei’s growth looks unstoppable as well. With its focus mainly on the Chinese market, the company’s sales are driven by their fitness tracker in comparison to Apple who is focused more on their smartwatches.
