The East Carolina football team has sought safety from Hurricane Florence by temporarily relocating to Orlando, Florida.
The ECU Athletics Department said in a released statement, „A decision was made to relocate the East Carolina University football team to Orlando by bus early Wednesday morning. The location was determined based on the track of Hurricane Florence and lodging availability, along with lessons learned from recent past difficulties returning home to an area impacted by widespread flooding. Should this be the case again as forecasted, accessibility and transitional logistics for our next game in Tampa become manageable.“
The Pirates‘ next scheduled game is versus South Florida in Tampa on Sat. Sept. 22.
East Carolina opted not to travel for its scheduled game this Saturday at Virginia Tech. The ECU athletic department cited „significant safety concerns,“ and Hurricane Florence’s „high probability of a catastrophic impact on the region and perilous travel conditions,“ throughout the weekend.
The football team’s canceled travel plans are part of the entire athletic department prohibiting teams from traveling for competition purposes this weekend.
ECU is hoping to reschedule its matchup versus Virginia Tech for later in the season.
