Google shipped 2.3 million Home Mini units during the second quarter, capturing 20 percent of the market, according to Strategy Analytics. Amazon’s Echo Dot nabbed 18 percent with 2.2 million units shipped. Meanwhile, in terms of revenue, Apple was the leader.
The Google Home Mini was the world’s No. 1 selling smart speaker during the second quarter of 2018, beating close runner up Amazon Echo Dot, according to new data from Strategy Analytics.
Google shipped 2.3 million Home Mini units during the period, capturing 20 percent of the market. Amazon’s Echo Dot nabbed 18 percent of the market with 2.2 million units shipped. The full-sized Amazon Echo came in third with 12 percent market share, while Alibaba’s Tmall Genie and Google Home rounded out the top five, each grabbing 7 percent of shipments.
„Unsurprisingly, Amazon and Google models dominated the best-selling list of smart speakers in Q2 2018,“ David Watkins, director of Strategy Analytics‘ smart speaker service, said in a statement . „The Google Home Mini and Amazon Echo Dot accounted for a combined 38 percent of global shipments although they contributed just 17 percent towards the value of the market due to their low price.“
In terms of revenue, Apple was the leader, Watkins added. The Cupertino tech giant captured just 6 percent of smart speaker shipments with its HomePod, but 16 percent of revenue. When it comes to the „small but growing“ $200+ premium smart speaker segment, Apple holds a solid 70 percent share.
Going forward, Google, Amazon, and other smart speaker makers will face more competition.
„The number of smart speaker models available worldwide has grown significantly over the last 12 months as vendors look to capitalize on the explosive market growth,“ Strategy Analytics Vice President David Mercer said in a statement. „Heavyweight brands such as Samsung and Bose are in the process of launching their first models, adding further credibility to the segment and giving consumers more options at the premium-end.“
