If you’re one of many Playstation gamers that makes use of the Playstation Now service to play games that you only want to rent, rather than buy, Playstation has some good news for you. Playstation Now games from the Playstation 4 and Playstation 2 can be downloaded for you to play offline.
Previously, Playstation Now games had to be played exclusively online, which could be impractical for gamers with weak internet connections or if they encountered signal trouble with their wifi, with gamers stuttering and lagging and sometimes kicking them out entirely. Now, with the Playstation 4 and Playstation 2 games being available for offline download, that issue has been somewhat averted.
Playstation Now has a wide variety of games to play from the various different iterations of Sony’s premiere gaming console, such as the entirety of the Killzone series, the entire God of War series, Red Dead Redemption, and more.
Of course, there are limitations. While you can download Playstation 2 games, the only games that applies to from the console are Playstation 2 games that have already been remastered for the Playstation 4, such as the Jak and Daxter port, Crash Bandicoot’s N. Sane Edition, and likely Spyro the Dragon’s Reignited Trilogy when he gets his own Playstation 4 remaster.
In order to keep your downloaded Playstation Now games you’ll have to confirm your Playstation Now subscription every few days, but otherwise you can keep those games as long as you want, so long as you continue to pay Playstation Now’s subscription every month.
With Playstation Now having more and more games added to it all the time, it’s likely that we’ll be able to download a lot of upcoming games in the future. While it’s not the same sort of backwards compatibility that the Xbox One has, where you can pay for the games and own them forever (or get them for free if you already own the physical 360 games for them), it’s a good enough alternative.
