This two-minute trailer by Dmitry Grozov is a virtuoso tribute to both 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope and 1980s anime.
Star Wars ’ next official animated series, Star Wars Resistance, premieres Oct. 7. Nothing against it but, um, I’d rather see all of this first.
Unfortunately, Dmitry Grozov ’s take on A New Hope ( h/t to io9 spying this) is a trailer only. But it manages to be a virtuoso depiction not only of Star Wars ’ most memorable shots, but also the rugged framerate and sleek style of late 1970s/early 1980s anime.
Better yet, Grozov (aka Ahriman) includes Japanese voice acting to complete the alternate-universe hallucination that Star Wars either was adapted as an anime or began life as one. (Why not? George Lucas borrowed heavily from Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress in building his original story.)
Theres no post-credits sequence, but stick around anyway to give some recognition to those who put this together: Maria Shestakova (assistant animator) Georgy Khabarov and Unusual Suspect (editors).
