President Trump – holed up in the White House Saturday as much of official Washington attends a memorial service for Arizona Sen. John McCain – fired off a pair of tweets on a new revelation about the federal investigation into his 2016 campaign.
“Report: There were no FISA hearings held over Spy documents,” Trump tweeted at 8:26 am.
On Friday, the Department of Justice confirmed to the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch that the controversial warrants to conduct surveillance on Trump campaign aide Carter Page were granted by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court based only on the agency’s written submissions. Page was suspected of being a Russian agent, and has played a key role in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
The court “did not hold any hearings” on the Page warrants, according to a DOJ response to a lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch.
“‘You’ve got corruption at the DOJ & FBI,’” Trump tweeted, quoting Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton. “ ‘It isn’t about Carter Page, it’s about the Trump Campaign.’”
In an earlier pair of tweets, Trump decried the Friday leak of his off-the-record comments on the ongoing – and notably contentious – Canadian trade negotiations.
“’I think today what has happened is that news reporting has become part of the adversary system,’” he tweeted, quoting legal commentator Alan Dershowitz.
Trump previously confirmed a Friday report that he had told journalists from Bloomberg that he has no intention of making any concessions to Canada as the US moves ahead with a deal with Mexico.
“I love Canada, but they’ve taken advantage of our Country for many years!” Trump tweeted on Saturday.
