The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S and Xiaomi Mi 8 are set to receive the same camera tech as the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, according to company founder Lei Jun. The update is possible because all three phones have the same rear-camera setup.
Xiaomi founder Lei Jun has revealed the company is planning to bring the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3‘s camera tech to the Xiaomi Mi 8 and the Mi Mix 2S. In a post on Weibo (via GSMArena), Jun said the upgrade is possible because all three devices use the exact same rear-camera hardware.
This is pretty big news for users of the older devices as despite the identical hardware — a 12MP regular lens (Sony IMX363) and a 12MP telephoto lens (Samsung S5K3M3+) — initial signs suggest the Mi Mix 3’s camera performance offers a big improvement.
The day before unveiling the Mi Mix 3, Xiaomi showed off an impressive photo taken in a low-light environment.
Then, on the day of the phone’s release, photography analysis website DxOMark gave the phone’s camera a score of 103, putting it on the same level as the Galaxy Note 9. In comparison, the Mi 8 scored 99, while the Mi Mix 2S scored 101.
DxOMark said the Mi Mix 3’s photo quality was “up there with some of the best devices” they’ve tested. The outlet also praised the video performance, saying it offered better stabilization compared to the Mi 8.
Xiaomi has spent plenty of time focusing on the Mi Mix 3’s low-light capabilities, delivering a handheld night mode akin to Huawei’s night mode. In fact, Xiaomi compared night shots taken with the Mi Mix 3 to the same scene shot with the P20 Pro. So it stands to reason that we’ll see this handheld night mode on the Mi 8 and Mi Mix 2S.
While Lei Jun did not give a date for the update to hit the Mi Mix 2S and Mi 8, he said it would be coming as soon as possible. Given that the phones use the same camera hardware, it perhaps won’t be too long before Xiaomi begins to roll out the update.
