Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S. C.) fired back when audience members booed him at the Atlantic Ideas Festival on Wednesday.
Speaking with Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, Graham said that he thought Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, was treated “respectfully” while Kavanaugh was treated “like crap.”
Still, Graham said that he didn’t “like” President Trump mocking Ford’s testimony at a rally Tuesday night.
“I don’t like what the president said last night. I’m the first person to say, ‚I want to hear from Dr. Ford,’” Graham said. “I thought she was handled respectfully. I thought Kavanaugh was treated like crap.“
The audience loudly booed, to which Graham responded: “Yeah, well boo yourself.”
Goldberg then turned to the audience and asked them to “please be respectful of this conversation so we can have the conversation.”
Graham was also booed at least one other point during the interview. Audience members laughed, booed and jeered at Graham after he said he respected Democrat’s Supreme Court picks in the past.
In response to the boos, Graham said that if there is a Supreme Court vacancy during Trump’s final term as president, he would hold the seat open until after the election.
“This may make you feel better, but I really don’t care,” Graham said. “If an opening comes in the last year of President Trump’s term, and the primary process has started, we’ll wait until the next election.”
