The Haunting of Hill House isn’t just a spooky thriller on Netflix, the ten episode series might actually be its best original show of all time.

I have been thinking about The Haunting of Hill House ever since I finished its last episode, and I’m finding it’s something that’s almost impossible to get out of my mind. Not because I’m haunted by its spooky ghosts (though they are spooky) or its horrific imagery (like I was with Hereditary), but because it was just so good.
The directing, the acting, the writing, all of it comes together to produce what could be one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, and it got me thinking, at the very least, is this Netflix’s best original show ever?
I definitely think it is.
I was hesitant to say that out loud, because these kinds of things are rooted entirely in opinion. My other favorite Netflix shows are probably The Punisher, The Crown, Altered Carbon, Glow and American Vandal, though I’d respect it if others disagreed.
And yet when I went searching to see if there was a “right” answer for this, I was surprised at what I found.

Others agree. According to IMDB ratings, right now The Haunting of Hill House is in fact the highest user rated Netflix original show I can find. And that’s even if you cheat by adding in all-time great shows Netflix adopted like Black Mirror or Arrested Development. The Haunting of Hill House is the only show to break a 9.0 on IMDB, and that’s the best metric we have, given that Netflix has completely eliminated its own user ratings from its service. Stupidly, in this case, as you have to Google the hell out of all their shows to figure out if they’re good or not.
Here is the list of what I would consider to be the “top” Netflix originals, and how they stack up to The Haunting of Hill House. When more ratings come in, it may dip to an 8.9, but even then, wow.
What to make of this list? For my money, House of Cards is way too high, I apparently need to watch Peaky Blinders and Narcos, and American Vandal, Altered Carbon and Glow should all be way higher. Also IMDB seems a tiny bit racist as great shows like Luke Cage and Dear White People aren’t even on this list as they’re in the 6-7 range.

But as you can see, The Haunting of Hill House is on top, and I highly, highly recommend it. Not just to horror fans, as obviously they should all watch it, but even if you just like solid dramas, it’s just fantastic, and you’ll only have to endure a handful of true jump scares. Everyone involved in this project should have a blank check for whatever they do next.
