Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Tuesday that the U. S. has taken steps to punish those it suspects of being involved in the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, including revoking visas.
Pompeo also said during a media briefing that the State and Treasury departments are looking at the possibility of sanctions meant to target those responsible for human rights violations.
The announcement came shortly after President Trump called the kingdom’s efforts to hide Khashoggi’s killing inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul the “worst cover-up ever,” stepping up his rhetoric as frustrations directed at Riyadh grow.
Saudi Arabia acknowledged for the first time late last week that Khashoggi died inside the consulate, after saying for weeks that it did not know his whereabouts.
The kingdom claimed that the U. S.-based journalist died after a „brawl“ inside the facility. Turkish officials have said Saudi operatives killed and dismembered him in the consulate.
“They had a very bad original concept, it was carried out poorly and the cover-up was the worst in the history of cover-ups,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday. “They had the worst cover-up ever.”
