Xiaomi fans are eagerly waiting for the company’s October 15 launch event, where the company is expected to unveil its next flagship smartphone, likely dubbed the Mi MIX 3. However, it looks like the Chinese manufacturer might be working on a new variant of the Mi 6 as well. An unannounced smartphone with the model name Mi 6S has been spotted on the popular Geekbench benchmark database. Interestingly, the smartphone is running on the latest Android 9 Pie operating system.
The Xiaomi Mi 6S Geekbench listing reveals the smartphone runs on a Qualcomm MSM8998 SoC, i.e. the Snapdragon 835. As most of you may be aware, the Snapdragon 835 was Qualcomm’s flagship mobile chipset last year and powered pretty much all popular Android flagship smartphones released in 2017. While the chipset may not be comparable to 2018 flagship mobile chipsets, it still manages to deliver impressive performance. The Xiaomi Mi 6S prototype managed to score 1,830 points in the single-core test and 6,944 points in the multi-core test. Apart from the Snapdragon 835 chipset, the Mi 6S Geekbench listing reveals the smartphone will come equipped with 6GB of RAM. As mentioned already, the Mi 6S prototype was caught on Geekbench running on Google’s latest Android 9 Pie operating system. The fact that the device is running on Android 9 Pie suggests the device is currently being tested internally by Xiaomi. Of course, there is also a possibility that the listing may be fake. It is not uncommon for fake results to show up in the Geekbench database. However, if the listing is not fake, we expect it to share a few key features in common with the Mi 6.
Xiaomi is expected to launch the Mi MIX 3 and the Mi Note 4 at its launch event in China on October 15. In case the Mi 6S does exist, there is a good chance that Xiaomi may launch it alongside the Mi MIX 3 and Mi Note 4 smartphones on Monday. Since it runs on an outdated Snapdragon 835 chipset, we expect the smartphone to be priced significantly lower than devices like the Mi 8 and Mi MIX 2S in China. The main highlight at the October 15 event, will, of course, be the Mi MIX 3. Xiaomi’s next-generation Mi MIX series smartphone is rumored to feature a manual slider design to allow for an impressive screen-to-body ratio. It is expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset under the hood, although some recent rumors claim the handset may be the first to run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 ( 8150) SoC. The Mi MIX 3 is expected to come with an AMOLED display featuring Full HD+ resolution, an in-display fingerprint sensor, 3D facial recognition, and wireless charging. In the memory department, the Mi MIX 3 is rumored to pack 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. It could also be Xiaomi’s first smartphone to be 5G-enabled.
