SAN FRANCISCO – Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg has pledged to release an update on the civil rights audit of the social media company‘ impact on communities of color by year’s end.
Sandberg made the commitment during a one-hour meeting with Rashad Robinson, president of Color of Change, at Facebook’s Silicon Valley headquarters on Thursday, Facebook said.
She also apologized to the civil rights group for a Facebook consulting firm attempting to link Color of Change to liberal billionaire George Soros, the subject of far-right anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.
The sit down with the social media company’s chief operating officer came one day after a former black employee, Mark Luckie, went public with allegations that Facebook is „failing its black employees and its users.“ It also came the same day The New York Times reported that Sandberg asked Facebook’s communications staff to probe Soros’s financial interests in January after the billionaire philanthropist attacked Facebook and Google in a speech at the World Economic Forum.
At the urging of 19 civil rights groups, Facebook said in May it would conduct a civil rights audit amid growing concerns over discriminatory advertising and voter suppression on the platform, but it has declined to say whether it would release the findings to the public.
