As promised, Epic Games launches a special, one-time in-game event in Fortnite battle royale that gets rid of the mysterious purple cube and changes Leaky Lake.
Millions of Fortnite players put away their pickaxes and holstered their weapons for a brief moment of solidarity to witness one of the battle royale’s most ambitious in-game events to date. After months of build-up, rumors, and speculation, the giant purple cube that has been roaming around the map finally exploded, potentially changing the battle royale map forever.
After the cube exploded, Fortnite players were treated to a blinding white screen, and were then transported to a strange digital world where they were just floating with all the other players in the match. A rift with butterfly wings then approached them, landed on their finger, and transported them to the brand new Fortnite map, which features a completely new version of Leaky Lake.
Leaky Lake, once known as Loot Lake, now has far less water, as new landmasses have covered much of the area. The center of Leaky Lake is a tranquil garden dotted with brightly colored flowers, as well as some remnants of the purple cube that captured the imagination of Fortnite enthusiasts for the past few months.
At the time of this writing, it’s unclear if the event brought any other changes to the battle royale map. The Fortnite servers appear to be down basically across the board, with only some people actually able to get into a match. Once things calm down a bit, we will be able to determine if there have been any other major changes to the map or not.
Now that the cube saga has seemingly ended in Fortnite, one has to wonder what’s next for the battle royale game. Prior to the cube, everyone was talking about the meteor that destroyed Dusty Depot (transforming it into the new location known as Dusty Divot), and it seems likely that Epic is going to continue with these special live events as they seem to be popular with fans of the game. It’s impossible to say at this point what the next live event will be in Fortnite, but rest assured it’s sure to bring with it some changes to the battle royale map.
Fortnite is out now in early access for iOS, Android, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
