Before the release of the Motorola One Power, the Lenovo-owned Motorola was not having a good year as its entry-level phones were struggling in the market. Released as a part of Google’s Android One program, the Snapdragon 636-fueled smartphone can be passed off as an affordable iPhone X ( review) knock-off, strictly in terms of design. Originally released with Android 8.1 Oreo, the Motorola One Power is now all set to get the Android 9.0 Pie update.
One of the perks of the Android One program is the frequent software updates. A couple of weeks ago, the Motorola One Power was spotted running Android 9.0 Pie on Geekbench and now the company has officially confirmed that the phone would get Android Pie in the coming days. Released in August, the Android Pie is only available on a few handsets right now, including Google’s Pixel smartphones, the Essential Phone, Nokia 7 Plus, OnePlus 6, and OnePlus 6T.
The Motorola One Power users have received a notification that promises that Android 9.0 Pie would arrive on their phones in the next few days. Given that the phone was released just a month ago, it is commendable that the company has swiftly made good on its promise of bringing the Pie update to the entry-level phone.
Android 9 Pie is one of the most significant Android updates in recent years. The revamped OS seeks to change the way we navigate our phones and interact with it. Some of the highlights of the update include a gesture-based navigation system, app time limits, an improved Do Not Disturb mode, screenshot editing, and smarter app search results.
Specifically for Motorola One Power, the Android Pie update would also mean that Dual 4G VoLTE support would be activated, allowing both supported SIM cards in the phone to connect to LTE networks. The UI is expected to look the same as Android Pie on Google’s Pixel branded phones since it is a part of the Android One program. The users can also expect to receive frequent security patch updates for the next three years at least.
When the Motorola One Power was launched in India, the company’s Product Manager Abhisek Kumar had revealed that soak test registrations for the Android Pie would be opened soon, indicating that users would be able to try a developer preview first. Soak testing is a pretty standard practice for the company and it enables a select few users to try out the new update to provide their feedback and identify bugs. When the bugs are removed, the update receives a green light and is rolled out for all users. So, once the soak testing has been done, we can expect the full rollout to start soon afterward. Even though the company has not released a specific timeline, the large-scale rollout will presumably begin in the coming weeks.
The Motorola One Power is available at INR 15,999 and is a Flipkart-exclusive phone in India. The phone packs a gigantic 5000mAh battery and sports a massive 6.2-inch notched display. It has up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage and has a dual rear camera system (16MP + 5MP). Here is our review of the phone:
