Samsung Mobile changes its Facebook profile photo to an image of the Samsung logo folded in half, a not-so-subtle hint that the Korean tech giant will indeed unveil a foldable phone at its developer conference this week.
Prepare yourself for a foldable smartphone, Samsung fans.
Samsung Mobile on Sunday changed its Facebook profile photo to an image of the Samsung logo folded in half. Many are taking that as a not-so-subtle hint that the Korean tech giant is planning to unveil the long-awaited foldable phone at its annual developer conference, which takes place Nov. 7-8 in San Francisco.
The move shouldn’t be shocking. During a September interview with CNBC, Samsung Mobile CEO DJ Koh said the South Korean tech giant plans to unveil a smartphone with a foldable display this year. „It’s time to deliver,“ Koh said at the time, adding that the „complicated“ development process was „nearly concluded.“
Anticipation for Samsung’s foldable phone is high, especially in light of Koh’s comments. In a recent PCMag survey, 44 percent of the 2,500 people we polled said they wanted Samsung to unveil a foldable phone at its Oct. 11 „4X Fun“ event in Malaysia. That didn’t happen, as PCMag’s Lead Mobile Analyst Sascha Segan predicted. Instead, Samsung unveiled the 4-camera, midrange Galaxy A9.
Now, those following the fabled Samsung foldable have turned their attention to Nov. 7.
„The US is… now a $1,000 phone market, homeland of the excessively maximal iPhone XS Max, and a more likely place to unveil a super-high-end, cutting edge, folding smartphone,“ Segan wrote ahead of the Malaysia event last month.
As for other features, rumor has it the foldable handset will offer the functionality of a tablet with multitasking capabilities. PCMag will be there, so stay tuned for all the details.
Last week a little-known company called Royole Corporation beat Samsung to the punch, introducing the world’s first smartphone with a foldable display. The FlexPai features a flexible screen that can fold up like a wallet.
