With Android 9 Pie, Samsung will also be replacing Experience UI with the new One UI skin.
Samsung’s ongoing developer conference has already made headlines as it saw the unveiling of the company’s first-ever foldable smartphone. While this is the big story of the day, Samsung also revealed another little piece of information that will delight Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ users. The company has confirmed that its 2018 flagships will be updated to Android 9 Pie come January 2019. With Android 9 Pie, Samsung will also be replacing Experience UI with the new One UI skin.
The open beta program for Android 9 Pie will be available later this month in the US, South Korea and Germany while other European and Asian countries should get access to the beta program at a later stage. Notably, One UI will be the new custom Samsung interface on top of Android 9 Pie. The redesigned interface was announced alongside Samsung’s new foldable phone. Samsung has worked closely with Google and Android developers to create a UI that is minimalistic, showing only relevant content on the bottom of the screen for easy one-handed use. It also brings a system-wide night mode.
Some One UI features such as the ability to run three apps simultaneously have been designed to work on a tablet-like display (such as the foldable phone), and we will have to wait and see what the interface will look like on non-foldable Galaxy phones. Android 9 Pie should bring features like Adaptive Battery, App Actions, Slices and Adaptive Brightness to the Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9 and S9+.
Samsung announced the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ earlier this year at MWC 2018. The company followed it up with the Galaxy Note 9 a few months later and all three flagships are available in India. All three devices come with the trademark Infinity Displays in differing sizes. The Galaxy Note 9 gets the biggest display for a Note at 6.4-inches. They’re powered by an Exynos 9810 chipset and ship with Android Oreo with Experience UI on top.
