On Jan. 12,2006, Mike McCarthy stood before a horde of media members and delivered the following promise.
“I’d like to acknowledge the fans of Green Bay and just to let you know that there will be an unconditional commitment… to bring a World Championship back to Green Bay,” McCarthy said the day he was hired as Green Bay’s head coach. “I think that’s very important to state that right up front.”
McCarthy eventually delivered on that promise, leading the Packers to a win in the 45 th Super Bowl. Nearly 13 years later, though, McCarthy was fired as the Packers’ head coach.
Green Bay, in the midst of a horrendous 4-7-1 season, was a 14-point favorite against Arizona Sunday, but lost at home to the dreadful Cardinals. Less than three hours after that game, McCarthy was fired.
Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin was named interim head coach.
McCarthy became just the ninth coach in NFL history to be fired by the team that he led to a Super Bowl. The others are Hank Stram (Kansas City), Don McCafferty (Baltimore Colts), Tom Landry (Dallas), Mike Ditka (Chicago), George Seifert (San Francisco), Mike Shanahan (Denver), Brian Billick (Baltimore) and Jon Gruden (Tampa Bay).
McCarthy became just the second coach in team history to be fired during the season. In 1953, Gene Ronzani was fired after 10 games, then Ray “Scooter” McLean and Hugh Devore served as co-head coaches the final two games.
“The 2018 season has not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers,” President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Murphy said, “As a result, I made the difficult decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately.”
McCarthy, who was in his 13 th season, was the second-longest tenured coach in team history behind only Earl “Curly” Lambeau (1921-’49). McCarthy went 125-77-2 in Green Bay and his.618 winning percentage ranks fourth in team history behind Vince Lombardi (.754), Mike Holmgren (.670) and Lambeau (.668).
McCarthy guided the Packers to a win over Pittsburgh in the 45 th Super Bowl, a year where the Packers got red hot as the No.
