Roma was not the only stunning black-and-white foreign film of 2018. Paweł Pawlikowski’s romantic drama Cold War is a similarly gorgeous work, one that shows the director’s elegant craftsmanship and storytelling. Beginning in Poland after World War II, Cold War opens on a rural village, where Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) and Irena (Agata Kulesza) are recording the music of the provinces. Working for the communist government, they are building a program to gather the rough musical talents of the Polish countryside and train them to perform for the nation’s glory. An enigmatic young woman named Zula (Joanna Kulig) catches Wiktor’s eye — she has a golden-tongue and an aura of danger — and the two begin an affair that will persist over the coming years, as the two split apart and come together time after time across Europe.
