Nvidia Spends $6.9 Billion to Buy Mellanox Technologies
Nvidia said that it would spend approximately $6.9 billion to buy Mellanox Technologies, a major player in the world of switches and other networking chips used in data centers and supercomputers. Nvidia sees Mellanox’s Infiniband and Ethernet products as complementary to its graphics chips, which are increasingly used in the data centers of major cloud computing firms, including Amazon, Google and Microsoft.
Nvidia’s chips have emerged as the leading platform for training artificial intelligence models on huge amounts of data, a class of computations Intel has struggled to adapt to.
