Unemployment claims dropped in Michigan last week to the lowest level since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, a potentially good sign that comes as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer begins to outline plans to re-engage parts of the economy.
In a week-to-week comparison of new claims, the number of claims for the state declined to 81,312 in the week ending April 25, down from 134,119 the week ending April 18.
Still, this week’s claims are higher than during the recession in 2009 — the weekly high was about 77,000 — and experts say unemployment claims could rise again as states work through a backlog of claims and more businesses that tried to maintain their staff initially resort to layoffs and furloughs.
