Josh Moyer has been playing guitar since he was a kid. It’s the center point of his life.
Earning a degree in jazz studies from Michigan State in 2017, Moyer has made it his life’s mission to spread his love for guitar, and sometimes the ukulele, professionally, teaching at Expressions Music Academy’s Canton location.
Memories stir whenever he starts working with a new student.
“I can just totally see myself in them,” Moyer said. “When they hear ‘Iron Man’ for the first time, and they are like, ‘Man, this is so dope,’ I remember when I had those same exact thoughts and feelings.”
Moyer looks back at how his music teachers helped him fall in love with the guitar and with music. He encourages his students similarly, learning the songs they want to play, within reason.
He remembers that feeling of learning to play, coming back each practice ready to learn even more.
Like most businesses across the country, the coronavirus pandemic shut the doors of the school physically, but it’s still working to teach the love of music virtually.
Jessica Schatz, owner of Expressions Music Academy, implemented Zoom-based video lessons to keep business going and to keep music students engaged.
