Internal Audit Slams Facebook’s ‘Inadequate’ Civil Rights Approach As Companies Boycott

The two-year audit found Facebook’s recent decisions have resulted in “serious setbacks for civil rights.”
As scrutiny has sharply intensified around Facebook’s policies around hate speech, misinformation and civil rights in recent weeks—prompting an advertising boycott backed by 900 major companies—an internal civil rights audit of Facebook’s policies reports that Facebook has made “painful decisions” that have had “real world consequences that are serious setbacks for civil rights.”
“In our view Facebook has made notable progress in some areas, but it has not yet devoted enough resources or moved with sufficient speed to tackle the multitude of civil rights challenges that are before it,” the audit notes. “This provokes legitimate questions about Facebook’s full-throated commitment to reaching the summit, i.e., fighting discrimination, online hate, promoting inclusion, promoting justice and upholding civil rights.
