Hundreds of thousands of renters are at risk of being kicked out of their homes after the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the CDC’s eviction moratorium in a 6-3 decision.
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Hundreds of thousands of renters are at risk of being kicked out of their homes after the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the CDC’s eviction moratorium in a 6-3 decision. “The solution here is not extended moratoria indefinitely. The solution here is getting the rent relief money out, making sure that the $2.6 billion in money that was allocated from the federal government reaches the hands of landlords and tenants who need that help,” Olga Someras, general counsel to the Rent Stabilization Association, told CBS2’s Kevin Rincon. In the ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, “our system does not permit agencies to act unlawfully even in pursuit of desirable ends.” Justice Stephen Breyer, in the dissent, said the people this order was meant to protect “may end up with relatives, in shelters, or seeking beds in other congregant facilities where the doubly contagious Delta variant threatens to spread quickly.
