New York City’s budding performing artists will have to get their jabs if they want to shine onstage. City school students eligible to get COVID vaccines will be required to get their shots to participate in several “high-risk” extracurricular activities this school year. Mayor de Blasio announced the new mandate Friday and said the activities included are chorus, musical theater, dance, band and cheerleading. “Any young person who wants to participate in those activities will have to be vaccinated to be able to do so,” he said during an appearance on WNYC. The new requirement, which would apply to vaccine-eligible kids ages 12 and older, follows several others, including mandates that school employees and childcare workers show proof of vaccinations in order to report to work. De Blasio is also requiring student athletes who are vaccine eligible to show proof of getting at least one shot to participate, or face sitting on the sidelines.
