With just five days left in 2021, it’s time to count down the best films for ringing in the New Year.
The holiday season is coming to a close, so attention is shifting to year-end box office and award season. But those things will have to wait a bit longer, as the year’s end means it’s time for my list of the top 10 best movies to watch for your 2021 New Year’s Eve and 2022 New Year’s Day. It’s been another hard year, with yet another ongoing pandemic surge and new variant, with political turmoil and the continued threat of another fascist coup attempt, with a climate that’s falling apart around us, and — to bring it all home to my point in writing this article — a movie industry struggling to find its footing or make successful plans for the future. Films are being delayed, cancelled, released into half-empty theaters, or redirected to streaming services. Some, like Spider-Man: No Way Home and No Time To Die, managed to score blockbuster box office despite the rising danger of pandemic spread and infection from indoor crowded places.
