In the first three seasons of Stranger Things, the residents of Hawkins, Indiana faced terrifying enemies, but nothing with any clear, human intelligence. From the Demogorgon of Season 1, to the massive Mind Flayer, everything has been an unknowable menace from the terrifying alternate dimension of the Upside Down. But finally, in the first full trailer for Stranger Things Season 4 we meet an antagonist who seems to be able to talk, think, and worst of all… Plan. Picking up six months after Season 3’s Battle of Starcourt, the cast is trying to live normal lives. Lucas is playing basketball. Eleven (Mille Bobby Brown) has lost her power, and not making any friends at her new school. Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) is mourning the loss of her brother Billy. And even Jim Hopper (David Harbour) is just trying to survive life in a Russian prison where they’re seemingly forced to fight Demogorgons. But as teased in the trailer, the Upside Down isn’t done with them yet. A strange, ticking grandfather clock is appearing everywhere. Max seems to be floating above the ground. And a new threat that is — or was — clearly human, yet all the trappings of the dark, monster-spawning dimension, is coming for them all. “You’ve broken everything,” it says at the beginning of the teaser. “Your suffering is almost… At an end.” Over a haunting version of Journey’s “Separate Ways” we check in with everyone, who are getting ensnared in increasingly more ominous circumstances.
