Elon Musk pledged not to restore banned accounts — such as former president Donald Trump’s — to the platform until after the midterm elections.
Elon Musk pledged early Wednesday that Twitter will not reinstate banned accounts for weeks, meaning users including former president Donald Trump will not have the ability to rejoin the social media site before the midterm elections.
The pledge came after a Zoom meeting with representatives of civil rights group where Musk discussed the content moderation council that he told the group would guide decision-making on user bans and policing of the platform.
In his tweet after the meeting, Musk said Twitter will not allow anyone back on the platform before there is a clear process to do so. He confirmed that he had met with the civil rights leaders.
Twitter will “continue to combat hate & harassment & enforce its election integrity policies,” he tweeted.
“I think it’s important..he’s made these statements now publicly,” said Rashad Robinson, the president of Color of Change, one of the groups present at the meeting. The others were the NAACP, the Anti Defamation League, Free Press, LULAC, and The Asian American Foundation, Musk said in his tweet.
During the meeting, which lasted a little under an hour, Robinson said the activists discussed the dangers of letting people back on the platform who have repeatedly violated the platform’s rules, though they didn’t mention Trump specifically. And they made a case for transparency about how Twitter might change its policies and who would serve on the content moderation council that Musk has proposed, Robinson said.
