Ellie (Bella Ramsey) starts Episode 8 with the same problem she’s had since Episode 6: Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) stab wound. She takes to the snow-covered woods to hunt for them and actually manages to take down a deer. That’s the good news. The bad? Two survivors find Ellie’s fallen deer before she does.
Pastor David (Scott Shepard), the clear leader of this duo, makes a deal with Ellie. He’ll send his partner James (Troy Baker) back to their settlement to get Ellie some medicine for her wounded friend. In exchange, Ellie will hand over some deer meat. Just as Ellie starts to trust David and James, they double cross her. It turns out that one of Pastor David’s men was murdered by a gruff man traveling with a teenage girl. Yep, this man of God is out for revenge. David and James capture Ellie and imprison her.
While Ellie is trying to break out her new cage, she learns the truth. The people of Silver Lake resort haven’t been surviving on deer meat alone. They’ve been cooking people and feeding them to their unknowing community.
As soon as Ellie confronts David about his crimes against man, he confesses. According to him, eating the dead was a last resort. He also reveals that he doesn’t worship and model his actions after God. No, his real idol is the Cordyceps fungi.
“What does Cordyceps do? Is it evil?” David asks. “No. It’s fruitful. It multiplies. It feeds and protects its children. And it secures its future with violence if it must.
