Over a decade after the launch of the Nintendo Wii U, a dedicated Nintendo fan finally collects the final game for their physical Wii U collection. Although the Wii U was a commercial failure, Nintendo gained valuable feedback and ideas that would prove to be essential for the success of the Nintendo Switch.
Wii U is Nintendo’s eighth generation console and successor to the Wii, which sold over 100 million units worldwide. However, Wii U was unable to recapture the success of the Wii, and sales quickly slowed down in the few years after the Wii U’s launch in late 2012. Only 13.56 million Wii U units were sold, and Nintendo had already begun to shift its attention away from the console in 2016 while developing the Nintendo Switch. In March 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild would be the Switch’s launch title and the Wii U’s last first-party title.
