Pope Francis left Rome’s Gemelli Policlinic hospital in a wheelchair, nine days after he was admitted for surgery to repair an abdominal hernia and remove painful intestinal scarring.
Pictures show the pontiff smiling and waving at a crowd of well wishers who had gathered to see him as he was taken to a waiting car.
Sergio Alfieri, the lead surgeon on the pope’s three-hour operation, told reporters Francis is doing “well” and “is in better shape than before.”
His medical team has previously said the operation was a success and without complications but advised the pontiff to take his time to recover and heal properly.
