A 58-year-old white woman was arrested in Florida Tuesday night for allegedly shooting and killing her neighbor Ajike ‘AJ’ Owens through her front door on Friday, police confirmed, following days of protests and calls for her arrest as law enforcement tried to determine if the shooting was permissible under the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law.Key Facts
Susan Lorincz was arrested on charges of manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery and two counts of assault, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a statement Tuesday night.
Lorincz allegedly fired a gun, shooting and killing Owens, on Friday night over a dispute involving Owens’ children, according to police reports, as Lorincz allegedly yelled at Owens’ children to stop playing on her property and threw a pair of roller skates at them.
When Owens knocked on Lorincz’s door to confront her “about striking [redacted name] with a pair of skates,” according to a police report, a weapon was fired from within Lorincz’s home, striking Owens, who called 911 as she collapsed.
Lorincz’s arrest follows days of protests and calls from Owens’ family and local politicians for the 58-year-old to be arrested, but police said they were still investigating whether the shooting was permissible under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which allows the use of deadly force if the person “reasonably believes that using or threatening to use such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony.
