Speaking at an event in Kentucky, McConnell abruptly froze for nearly 40 seconds after taking a question about running for Senate re-election when his term expires in 2026, before saying: “Ok.”
While McConnell remained frozen, an aide walked up to the senator’s side, asked him if he heard the question and told reporters, “we’re gonna need a minute,” before asking if anybody had any other questions.
In a similar episode, McConnell, who suffered a concussion in March, had frozen while delivering remarks on the annual defense spending bill in June, before being ushered off the podium, and coming back minutes later, saying he was “fine”—an aide to McConnell told NBC News after that event that the senator felt “lightheaded.
