Officials said that there had been no reports of shark bites on Rockaway Beach “in recent memory” before the attack Monday afternoon.
No swimming or surfing will be allowed on Rockaway Beach on Tuesday after a 50-year-old woman was bitten by a shark late Monday afternoon, according to the New York City parks department.
A shark bit the woman on her left leg as she swam near Beach 59th Street, a spokeswoman for the department said.
