New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy announced her campaign to run for senate in the 2024 elections on Wednesday, sparking immediate „Dynasty“ backlash.
The race pits Democrat Murphy, the wife of Governor Phil Murphy, a businesswoman and mother of four, in a primary fight with three-term Democratic Representative Andy Kim—and possibly with indicted Democratic Senator Robert Menendez, who was accused of federal bribery charges in September, which he denies, and has not yet said if he plans to seek re-election next year. If Murphy, a previous Republican, is elected, she would be the first woman to represent New Jersey in the Senate.
„We need a Senator who will work every single day to lower the cost of living, protect abortion rights, end the gun violence epidemic, and defend our democracy,“ Murphy said in a statement accompanying her campaign video.
Murphy, who has never officially held elected office, has been under scrutiny since announcing her campaign in a video posted to X, formerly Twitter, as many have been criticizing her decision to run over her family’s wealth and position of privilege.
