Georgia coach Kirby Smart challenged College Football Playoff selection committee members to believe what they see when judging his No. 1 Bulldogs following the end of their 29-game winning streak.
Smart also reminded the committee that in the CFP era, no team at the top of the playoff ranking has fallen out of the playoff by losing a conference championship game.
“When you talk about the four best teams, watch the game,” Smart said after Georgia’s 27-24 loss to No. 8 Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship game on Saturday. “Go ask the NFL talent evaluators. Go ask NFL scouts. It’s about the best teams.”
Smart’s Bulldogs also could complain about a questionable non-review call that happened in the second quarter of their loss.
In the second quarter, Alabama converted a fourth-and-4 play when wide receiver Isaiah Bond made a 22-yard catch on a Jalen Milroe pass.
Alabama snapped the ball without the playing being reviewed. Alabama went on to score a touchdown a few plays later to extend its lead to 17-7 at the time.
When CBS and other took a closer look at Bond’s catch, the ball moved after he hit the ground, but he did have some control of the ball.
Nevertheless, CBS officiating expert Gene Steratone said after halftime the play should have been reviewed, and he did not think it was a catch.
