The billionaire family that owns the Washington Nationals has said it won’t sell the baseball team almost two years after it first started looking for a buyer, ending years of uncertainty for fans and the city of Washington D.C.Key Facts

Mark Lerner, son of billionaire real estate magnates Annette and the late Ted Lerner, told the on Monday his family has decided not to sell the Washington Nationals.

Lerner first said in April 2022 his family was exploring the sale of the MLB franchise and looking for a buyer, three years after the team won its first and only World Series and embarked on a restructuring that has seen it rank at the bottom of the National League East for the last three seasons.

The decision of the Lerner family ends years of uncertainty for the Nationals and for Washington, D.C., a city that is currently under threat of losing its NHL, NBA and WNBA teams as owner Ted Leonsis (worth $2.8 billion, according to Forbes’ estimates) works to move the Capitals, Wizards and Mystics to Northern Virginia.
