The pop star said her sons, ages 9 and 11, „hated“ the film and thought it was „emasculating.“
„My sons absolutely hated it,“ she said. „They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I’m raising two boys. I want ‚em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women.“
The singer added: „I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well.“
Republicans and conservatives quickly took to X, formerly Twitter, to praise Shakira’s assessment about the film.
„Shakira nailed the Barbie movie,“ conservative influencer and former GOP congressional candidate Robby Starbuck wrote. „She’ll probably now face pressure to apologize for this but she shouldn’t.
