The federal corruption trial of New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez begins on Monday with jury selection.
New Jersey Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez heads to Federal District Court in Manhattan on Monday for the start of his latest corruption trial – the second in the last seven years.
Menendez is facing 16 charges, including obstruction of justice, bribery, extortion and public official acting as a foreign agent. Prosecutors allege the senator used his power and influence to gain lavish gifts, such as cash, gold bars a Mercedes-Benz convertible, furniture and payments on a home mortgage.
Menendez, who was first elected in 2006, has pleaded not guilty.What to Expect During the Trial
The trial will begin with jury selection on Monday. Opening statements are possible, but unlikely, before Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.
The prosecution has dozens of witnesses lined up, including „at least one non-law enforcement government official stationed outside of the United States,“ The reported. A businessman who has already pleaded guilty to his role in the scheme may testify as well.
Prosecution could also present physical evidence, such as the gold bars found in Menendez’s home.

Nadine Menendez is facing 15 charges for her alleged role in the corruption scheme. She was scheduled to appear in court with her husband, but her trial was delayed until July due to a „serious medical condition“ that required surgery, The New York Times reported.
Nadine Menendez is accused of playing a pivotal part in the alleged corruption, including relaying messages through emails and texts. Robert Menendez’s lawyers say that he may try to place the blame on her if he chooses to testify.
The couple has been married since 2020.
