Victory over England in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin would be the ultimate achievement for Luis de la Fuente and his squad of extremes in Germany.
Berlin will host fans of Spain and England on Sunday evening as the two come head to head for the Euro 2024 final, with both nations striving to record a historic victory. Spain, in particular, does so having blown away three different World Cup winning nations, now seeking to add a fourth in the final, with a team built through unity and diversity.
This squad is one of extremes. From 38-year-old Jesús Navas to 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, the diversity of this squad in every sense is clear. Exciting young winner Nico Williams was born in Pamplona, after his parents travelled across the Sahara from Ghana to make it to Spain. The semi-final hero Lamine Yamal’s parents came from Morocco and Equatorial Guinea before moving to Spain, where the teenager was born. Two of the team’s defenders, Aymeric Laporte and Robin Le Normand, were born in France.
In the dugout, coach Luis de la Fuente has done an incredible job of unifying a squad and a nation. He was not well-liked in the early stages of his reign, his controversial support of disgraced federation president Luis Rubiales earning him harsh criticism, while many were unconvinced by his persistence of sticking with veteran players like Nacho and Joselu, alongside unimpressive defeats to Scotland and Colombia in recent qualifiers and friendlies.
